Done Deal: Como Sign Raphael Varane on 2-Year Contract

In one of the most shocking football stories of the summer, Raphael Varane is close to joining Serie A newcomers Como. Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed last night that the ‘documents are ready’ and ‘set to be signed.’
Varane’s switch to Como doesn’t come out of the blue. Cesc Fabregas and his associates invested a gigantic effort to convince the former Real Madrid superstar to continue his career in Italy. The 31-year-old joins the Lariani as a free agent as his contract at Manchester United expired last month.
Despite his underwhelming three-year stint at Old Trafford, Varane is undoubtedly among the best defenders of his generation. The four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid struck a verbal agreement with Como over a week ago. But the Italians have had to settle other affairs before announcing this blockbuster deal.
While waiting for Varane to ink a two-year contract at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, Como completed two more acquisitions last week. Veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina and experienced left-back Alberto Moreno joined the Serie A minnows as free agents.
Andrea Belotti and Gabriel Strefezza signed for Como at the start of July, perhaps setting the tone for the most exciting transfer window in the club’s modern history. Varane’s impending arrival is probably the most significant signing completed by Como in the 21st century.
Much of the credit goes to Fabregas. He has persuaded the Frenchman to come and help Como avoid a quick relegation to Serie B.
