Done Deal: Rennes Sign Napoli Center-Back

Leo Ostigar’s torrid career at Napoli is drawing to a close, with Rennes set to announce the acquisition of the former Genoa defender on Monday. According to Fabrizio Romano, the French club will pay the Partenopei approximately €7 million to sign the 24-year-old.

Ostigar joined Napoli from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2022. But despite scoring on his Champions League debut for the club, the Norwegian’s career at the Diego Maradona Stadium has never taken off. Last season, he was at loggerheads with Walter Mazzarri and Francesco Calzona.

Antonio Conte’s arrival hasn’t changed Ostigard’s situation. It only made it worse as the decorated Italian manager put him up for sale, largely thanks to completing the signing of Alessandro Buongiorno and Rafa Marin from Torino and Real Madrid, respectively.

Aware of his underwhelming status at Napoli, Ostigard accepted Rennes’ proposal in a heartbeat. It didn’t take long before the two clubs found an agreement for the Molde academy graduate to continue his career in Ligue 1.

Ostigard’s departure could allow Napoli to intensify their interest in former Atletico Madrid center-back Mario Hermoso. Conte appreciates the Spaniard, whose contract at the Metropolitano Stadium expired at the end of his past June.

Next to leave the club could be Victor Osimhen. Napoli must cash in on their star striker to raise funds for new arrivals. However, the Nigerian’s rumored switch to Paris Saint-Germain remains on hold, as Les Parisians want to capture the services of Joao Neves from Benfica.
