Serie A giants Roma have completed a lightning-fast deal to sign Australia international goalkeeper Matthew Ryan. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the 32-year-old will join the Giallorossi on a short-term contract as a free agent after his contract at AZ Alkmaar expired at the end of June.
Though there was no sign of the Italians’ interest in the experienced stopper, the parties quickly agreed on a deal for Ryan to join forces with Daniele De Rossi’s team. However, he will not be a first-choice goalie for Roma next season.
Mile Svilar has soaked up the limelight as the club’s first option between the sticks since De Rossi replaced Jose Mourinho in the Roma dugout last January. Portuguese veteran Rui Patricio was a regular start during his compatriot’s tenure, but he lost his place in goal to the young gun midway through last season.
Ryan has emerged as a market opportunity for Roma. Otherwise, they would’ve probably never thought about handing him a contract, especially following Svilar’s rise to stardom last term. But after faring well for AZ Alkmaar, the Australian is ready for his maiden stint in Serie A.
While the newest Roma acquisition has never performed for an Italian club, he comes to the Stadio Olimpico carrying a wealth of experience. Before joining AZ Alkmaar, Ryan performed for Club Brugge, KRC Genk, Valencia, Arsenal, Brighton, Real Sociedad, and FC Copenhagen.
On the other hand, Roma have agreed on a deal to let Houssem Aouar join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.
