Dumfries Candid About Early Struggles, Names Inter Model

Denzel Dumfries needed some time to adjust to Serie A, but he turned things around: “The last few months have been fun but intense. Everything was new to me. Since the beginning, I have tried to understand how to stay in such a big club. I talked with the staff, got to know my teammates, and especially listened.”

Dumfries opened up in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport: “The different culture and language were the main difficulties. I could not understand properly at first. But football is always the same, and you just have to play well. I honed in on my position in the last two months. I understood what they were asking me to do and improved my defensive reads. Working hard and getting better are the foundations of my life.”

“The penalty kick I caused against Juventus was the toughest moment so far. It felt like the world crumbled on me. But the support from the club was palpable, and I quickly tried to regain the mental balance. Danilo D’Ambrosio rushed to hug me after scoring against Empoli in the next game, which had never happened to me. It was a positive shock and a true emotion. I realized that everybody was on my side.”

Dumfries concluded: “Scoring versus Roma was a watershed personally, but I will never forget the Supercoppa, which was my first major trophy. I do not like to think I am replacing Achraf Hakimi, as we are different. Inter have had incredible players on the right flank. The first one that comes to mind is Maicon, who is an example. I would like to get as close as possible to his levels.”
