Empoli Defender Eyes Napoli, Hint Dropped About Coach

Serxhio Mezi, who’s close to Ardian Ismajli, has revealed that the defender has been in talks with Napoli, and the move could materialize next summer. He dished to 1 Station Radio (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“We have been working on this deal since January. Other teams were interested, like Genoa and Sassuolo, but he wanted to make an extra step and opted for the Azzurri. I’m not his agent but an intermediary who’s been authorized to work on his transfer.”

“I know Napoli director Mauro Meluso very well, as he brought Ismajli to Spezia. He’s familiar with his capabilities. He’s a hard worker who leaves everything he has on the pitch. Every coach likes him.”

Mezi offered a hint about who might coach the Partenopei next season while discussing the center-back’s skill set.

“He can play in a three or a four-man line and also in front of it. He’d be very useful to them next to Amir Rrahmani. Their next manager might prefer the first style of defense. He’d be a very well-known name. Amir would surely fit. Is it Antonio Conte? We can’t say it.”

Our Take on Napoli and Ismajli

He’s not a household name, but if they switch things up tactically, they’d need a lot more depth than currently. Rrahmani is pretty much the only defender who’s 100 percent to stay put. Still, Conte is also familiar with 4-4-2, which would require fewer signings to work well.
