Empoli Fans Thanked for Unwavering Support Despite Awful Start

Empoli recently made their first sacking of the season to hire a familiar face in Aurelio Andreazzoli, who returned to coach the Gli Azzurri for the fourth time in his career. Former Serie B winner with the club, Andreazzoli realizes it is quite an ask to get Empoli out from the slump they currently see themselves in, having faced their fifth straight Serie A loss of the season against Inter last matchday.

Speaking to the press ahead of his side’s home clash against Salernitana, Andreazzoli commented on Empoli’s chances of getting out of their decline with the help of their faithful fans.

“The group wants to improve and this comforts me. Furthermore, there is another component that I want to emphasize: it is not easy after five defeats to have a supportive crowd like the one we had on Sunday, and to finally receive their encouragement. I usually hear the coach and players calling for apologies, but here there is the enthusiasm to try to contribute to solving the deficit issue. It doesn’t happen in many places and here we seem to be in England.” (via Tuttomercatoweb)

The Granata have had a day’s extra rest, having faced Frosinone on Friday, in contrast to Empoli’s Sunday clash against Inter.

“It would have been important to make points against Inter too. We face a team just above us, and therefore the importance of the ranking becomes pressing. It’s a different match. Salernitana is a quality team, they have an advantage, namely the fact that they played on Friday.”

Empoli are the first team in Serie A history to have lost five straight opening matches without scoring a single goal. However, their clash against Salernitana comes as a welcome sight given that the visitors have yet to taste victory this season.
