Empoli Opt for Second Coaching Change of the Season

Following the costly loss to Verona, Empoli have sacked Aurelio Andreazzoli and turned to Davide Nicola. The experienced gaffer guided them for 16 matches, collecting 3 wins and 13 total points.

The new manager inked a seasonal contract with an option for the next one if the Azzurri stay in Serie A, Ansa relays. They elected not to bring back Paolo Zanetti, who was at the helm at the beginning of the season. He helped them avoid relegation last year, but he got the boot after losing badly in the first four rounds.

After axing Andreazzoli, Empoli went with a specialist in Nicola. They are currently penultimate in the standings. They have a five-point deficit compared to Cagliari and Udinese, which hold a narrow lead over 17th-placed Verona. The Tuscan side has lost four times and drawn once in the last five matchdays.

The new boss helped Genoa, Torino, and Salernitana stay in Serie A in his previous stints, often overcoming the odds. He has rarely been confirmed afterward and struggled in his second season with the Campania side.

Our Take on Empoli, Andreazzoli, and Nicola

It’s almost an inevitable move since they won’t be able to overhaul their squad, so the turnaround will have to come from other places. It’s an unusual choice as they usually prefer tacticians with a proactive style, but they have tried two with poor results. They’ll have to make some tweaks to be grittier.
