Ex-Inter Striker Vieri Previews Supercoppa Italiana Final

Former Inter striker Christian Vieri believes Inter and Milan will start in the Supercoppa Italiana final on equal terms, without their recent history playing a part in the high caliber clash. Both derby rivals have experienced their respective ups and downs, and will be competing for the first trophy this campaign.

Bobo Vieri spoke to Corriere dello Sport (via FCInter1908), and highlighted some factors bound to affect the encounter.

“I expect the attackers to be decisive, they have to score goals. Also because between Dzeko, Lautaro, Leao and Giroud, they are only spoiled for choice.”

He then took stock of Stefano Pioli’s men charging for the cup title.

“Stefano Pioli is an intelligent technician, he will have already projected the team on the next challenges focusing on the psychological aspect. The group is valuable, what they did last year in Serie A shows this. It’s not that if you hurt for a couple of games, it’s all to be thrown away. Negative periods are part of football, the real problem is how external performance is perceived.”

When quizzed if Inter are favored according to bookmakers, Vieri shrugged off any such notions.

“No, in these games and between teams of this calibre we start on par. The difference will be made by those who manage to stay focused on the game. Because in football if you improve the game, then it is easier to win the games. However, it will be a show, a Milan derby with a full stadium and the whole world watching us.”

The Derby della Madonnina will be the first Supercoppa Italiana meeting between the two behemoths in Saudi Arabia. Milan come into the clash following two successive winless matches, including a Coppa Italia exit at the hands of Torino. Inter on the other hand, are on a 11-match unbeaten run.
