Ex-Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli has termed Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri as more tactical than Rossoneri coach Stefano Pioli, under whom he led Milan to a historic 19th Scudetto last season. The Diavolo cruised to a first league title win in over a decade to unsettle Inter’s hopes of a second successive Scudetti.
The 27-year-old defender played a pivotal role in the championship triumph before fulfilling his ‘dream’ move to Lazio. The new Biancocelesti signing only just arrived in Formello last month but has already noticed what makes one coach stand out more than the other, in his opinion.
Speaking at a press conference (via MilanNews), Romagnoli compared the styles of management between Sarri and Pioli.
“Sarri is more tactical. With Pioli there were more one-on-one duels across the board. Here, there is a different game, more suited to me and one that I like more.”
Romagnoli played under Pioli for three years, appearing in almost 100 games for the Parma-born manager. However, he suffered from the lack of game time in the second half of the recent season, as the coach preferred a center-back pairing of Fikayo Tomori and Simon Kjaer. Nevertheless, he is expected to have a starring role under Sarri at the Stadio Olimpico.
