Iconic Italian tactician Fabio Capello has shed his thoughts on the new Serie A season in an extensive interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan.it). The ex-Milan coach believes a repeat of last season’s exploits is possible, but there will be additional pressure with the likes of Napoli and Roma coming into the picture.
In short, the former Real Madrid manager thinks the 2022/23 Scudetto title will be a five-horse race.
“Repeat is possible, but the picture has changed. Milan is working to strengthen itself but the others have done so too, it will be an open fight with Inter, Juventus, Naples and Rome. Five well-equipped teams, with coaches who have won, what a show we have on our hands.”
When quizzed what’s the biggest obstacle Stefano Pioli will have to avoid within his Milan team full of champions, Capello said it’s all a game of psychology.
“The danger is in your head, especially if you train players who are not used to winning continuously. When you win, you tend to think you have done everything, but in a club like Milan, winning means having done your duty. success and start from scratch, with your mind in the present. Memories will come in handy later.”
The decorated manager then revealed the five teams he believes the Rossoneri should avoid in order to progress further down the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
“Milan is a structured, tested team. It has strengthened itself and is the reigning Italian champion. With a more ‘human’ group than last year’s, I think they can make a good impression in the cup too. There are five teams to avoid at the draws: City, Liverpool, Real, PSG and Bayern. With the exception of Liverpool, Milan are in the same range as the others this time.”
Milan beat Udinese 4-2 in the opening day of the Serie A championship at the San Siro. They will take on Atalanta next in Bergamo on Sunday evening.
