Koulibaly on Chelsea Move: “Time for a New Challenge”

Kalidou Koulibaly had the chance to join Chelsea six years ago – in 2016 – but eventually ended up joining them this transfer window on a four-year deal to become the club’s second summer signing behind Raheem Sterling. The ex-Napoli man left Serie A after eight seasons in the sky-blue colors, where he registered 317 appearances.

In his first interview to the microphones of Chelsea’s official website, the Senegal stopper revealed why he switched from Serie A to the Premier League.

“I spent eight years in Napoli, everyone knew me there and we were happy living in Naples. After eight years, I felt it was time for a new challenge and as soon as Chelsea called, I didn’t hesitate. It almost happened before in 2016 but now, in 2022, I’m delighted to be here.”

Koulibaly then disclosed a big factor in materializing his Chelsea switch – being in contact with former Napoli midfield ace Jorginho and fellow Senegal teammate Edouard Mendy.

“I speak a lot with them both. Jorgi actually texted me and asked if I wanted to come to Chelsea! At the time, I wasn’t sure if they wanted me but of course, I said I would come with pleasure. It was the same with Edou, he asked me the question and I told him it was already done and I would see him soon! Now I’m here, I’m really happy to start this exciting journey”

Koulibaly leaves Napoli with a remarkable legacy, albeit short of trophies. He won the Supercoppa Italiana in 2014 before grabbing the Coppa Italia in 2020.
