FIGC President Gabriele Gravina Elected to Chair UEFA

Italian Football Federation FIGC president Gabriele Gravina has been elected by UEFA as the federation’s vice-president, along professor Laura McAllister, who is a former Welsh footballer. The news was announced by re-elected president Aleksander Ceferin at the 47th UEFA Congress, held in Lisbon.

Gravina and McAllister will replace to-be FIFA vice-president Fernando Gomes and Hungarian executive Sandor Csanyi respectively.

“I thank Ceferin and my UEFA colleagues for this prestigious position which represents an important sign of trust, both on a personal level and for the Federation. In recent years, both in the Executive Committee and in the Commissions, we have worked tirelessly, with great seriousness and a spirit of collaboration for the development of European football, teaming up and tackling extremely complex issues. We will continue to do so with the same passion and self-sacrifice to face the great challenges that await continental football,” said Gravina. The new UEFA vice-president is a member of the executive committee since April 2021, when he had received 53 out of 55 preferences, resulting in the most votes for a member to be inducted in the history of the confederation.

In the absence of any rivals, Ceferin was re-elected unanimously by members for a third consecutive term, which will see him keep his presidential post for a four-year period, from 2023 to 2027.

“I promise you that I will never forget that we are here because of football. We will put football first, always. I will do whatever I can to protect football together with you,” said Ceferin in his UEFA speech.

Ceferin is currently the seventh serving president of UEFA, having replaced Michel Platini in 2016. He was chosen to continue leading the organization in 2019. Gravina, along with McAllister, will act the president’s deputies going forward.
