Italian Football Association (FIGC) President Gabriele Gravina announced that it’s time to renew Serie A.
In a long interview with Italian sports outlet Il Corriere dello Sport, Gravina took stock of some of the most sensitive and current issues of the Italian top-flight. Among the topics he touched on, Gravina addressed the possibility of introducing playoffs – a solution that has been talked about for a while.
“It’s time to try. In the ’90s, no one believed in 3 points for the win, but it worked. Playoffs in Serie B and Lega Pro have had success and visibility, that’s why I think that Series A also needs it. Not testing them could be a big mistake. The value of the sporting merit achieved in the ranking will be protected in any case”.
For Gravina, it is essential to think of innovative solutions. He believes the idea of a playoff round at the end of the regular season to be among the most beautiful things that could be offered.
He also added:
“There are too many foreign players in Serie A, I want to reverse the trend, valorizing youth sectors”.
In the past, many have spoken out against these projects as there are doubts about how a playoff round at the end of an already long season could be organized.
