Talks between Milan and Fikayo Tomori over the Englishman’s contract extension are well underway, as per Fabrizio Romano. Both parties want to continue together, and it’s only a matter of time before the deal becomes official, insists Romano.
Tomori has gone from strength to strength since joining Milan on a season-long loan from Chelsea in 2020/21. After a sensational maiden Serie A campaign, the Rossoneri dashed out £25million to turn his move permanent last summer.
It was the money well spent. Tomori formed a formidable defensive partnership with Pierre Kalulu at the tail-end of last season to provide the backbone for Stefano Pioli’s historic success.
He was one of the best-performing Milan players in the triumphant 2021/22 Serie A season. Week in, week out, the 24-year-old has proved his worth, replacing long-serving captain Alessio Romagnoli at the heart of the Rossoneri defence.
After establishing himself as a permanent fixture in Pioli’s tactical set-up, Tomori is now keen to make England’s World Cup squad later this year. His scintillating performances for Milan have put Gareth Southgate under pressure to hand him a well-deserved call-up.
Even though the Three Lions gaffer has yet to include Tomori in his star-studded selection, there’s a feeling the Milan centre-back is on the right trajectory. The ex-Chelsea misfit will get there sooner or later, but for now, his focus is on preparing for a new Serie A season.
Not many foreigners have settled at San Siro as quickly as Tomori. The reward should come in the form of a new contract. Indeed, the official announcement should only be a matter of formality.
As things stand, Tomori will be one of the mainstays of Pioli’s future endeavors with Milan.
