Fiorentina Leapfrog Inter in Race to Sign Italy International

Fiorentina might have been the last Serie A side to join the race to sign Tigre striker Mateo Retegui, but they’ve wasted no time moving at the head of the queue. As per CalciomercatoLa Viola have leapfrogged Inter, among others, in their quest to bring the Italian back to his homeland.

Retegui, who played for both Boca Juniors and River Plate in the youth ranks, is expected to move to Europe in the coming months. Despite representing Italy at the international level, the 24-year-old was born and raised in Argentina, spending his entire juvenile and senior career in South America.

Following an eye-catching season-long loan at Tigre, Retegui has earned a host of admirers in Europe. That must be sound to Boca’s ears, with his parent club rubbing their hands ahead of the imminent sale. The only unsolved matter is where he’ll be playing next season. Certainly, it won’t be the Liga Professional.

Inter had appeared to be the frontrunners to capture his services. With Romelu Lukaku likely to return to Chelsea upon the expiration of his loan spell and Edin Dzeko’s deal running out at the end of the month, Simone Inzaghi has flagged the attacking department as a must-improve area.

However, the Nerazzurri are currently embroiled in talks with Chelsea over agreeing on a new loan deal for Lukaku. It seems Fiorentina have spotted the window of opportunity and decided to act on it. Since Luka Jovic’s temporary spell at Artemio Franchi didn’t go as planned, Vincenzo Italiano is in the market for a new frontman.

Retegui tips many of the boxes for a type of player he’s looking to recruit, hence La Viola’s utmost attempt to convince the player to move to Tuscany. If he accepts to link up with Fiorentina, the Argentine native would follow in the footsteps of the legendary Gabriel Batistuta.
