Rocco Commisso attacked the top Italian sides and how Serie A is regulated in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“During my time here, I haven’t seen any improvement in many aspects, starting with the respect of the laws. Juventus were penalized, but Milan and Inter have kept spending despite having hundreds of million in debt. They didn’t want to intervene. Could they even register? Where’s Steven Zhang now? And the Bianconeri had to shell out €900M to cover their losses. These clubs wanted to fix their books with the Super League, hurting the domestic championships. Fortunately, such a project collapsed, and football was saved.”
Commisso would like to see some change within the institutions.
“I think that immobilism is an Italian disease. We must protect football, enforcing the rules and taking new paths. Unfortunately, even foreign ownerships couldn’t alter the system to obtain more resources and better balance profits and losses. Those who invest in Italy have to constantly pour money into clubs. It’s a bottomless pit. The only way to recoup that is to sell the team, if it hasn’t gone bankrupt beforehand.”
Commisso has often slammed Juventus but also completed a few transfers with them.
“What can I do if they are the only side that comes forward with real money? We made a great deal with Dusan Vlahovic. Look at Federico Chiesa: he joined Liverpool for €12M, while we sold him for €60M. Another sound piece of business for us. I wanted to keep the striker, but it was impossible to come to terms with his agent. The winger had already been sold when I took over, and I kept him, promising he would leave at our terms the following year.”
