Fiorentina Vying for Signature of Ex Barcelona Captain

Sergi Roberto is now officially a free agent, and the former Barcelona utility man could continue his career at Fiorentina. According to Calciomercato, the Spaniard is enthusiastic about playing in Serie A, with La Viola seeing him as a viable option to address their midfield shortcomings.

Roberto has spent his entire professional career at Barcelona. But the club refused to extend his expiring contract, resulting in his exit after nearly two decades. The 32-year-old came through the Blaugrana youth academy and made his senior debut for the Catalan juggernauts in 2010. After 14 years in La Liga, he could try his luck at Fiorentina.

It’s no secret that Fiorentina are in the market for midfield reinforcements. Back-to-back Europa Conference League runners-up parted with three senior midfielders at the end of last season. Alfred Duncan, Giacomo Bonaventura, and Arthur Melo left Tuscany at the start of July.

Thus far, Raffaele Palladino’s men have only landed Andrea Colpani on loan from Monza. There’s more than enough space for at least one more midfield addition, and Fiorentina view Roberto as a cost-effective signing to address potentially multiple issues within their squad.

During his trophy-laden stint at Camp Nou, Roberto proved capable of covering a multitude of roles from the back to deep in the frontlines. His versatility could help Fiorentina solve the shortage of numbers in the engine room.

Meanwhile, Fiorentina boss Palladino insists he’s keen to keep hold of Sofyan Amrabat, who returned to the club after a season-long loan at Manchester United.
