Former Inter Forward Linked with Unexpected Ligue 1 Comeback

Former Inter veteran Alexis Sanchez could head back to Ligue 1 after his contract at Giuseppe Meazza expired in June. According to Sky Sports via FCInterNews, his ex-club, Olympique Marseille, are willing to hand him a short-term contract at the Stade Velodrome.

Sanchez spent the 2022/23 season at Marseille. He was nothing short of impressive in France, racking up 14 goals and three assists across 35 league appearances. His renaissance in Ligue 1 convinced Inter to sign him back last summer.

Despite spending most of the 2023/24 campaign as a substitute, Sanchez was the Nerazzurri’s lucky charm again. After helping Inter end a decade-long Scudetto drought during his first stint at Meazza between 2020 and 2022, he brought them luck again last term.

Reduced to playing second fiddle to Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, the 35-year-old managed just 23 Serie A games. Sanchez’s indifferent tally of two goals and five assists wasn’t sufficient to earn him a new deal in Lombardy.

Instead, he could return to Marseille. Though he rarely featured for Inter last season, new Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi sees him as an upgrade on his current attacking options. Therefore, the French giants could offer him another season-long contract.

Marseille experienced an awful 2023/24 campaign. Forced to settle for a dismal eighth-place finish, they’ll miss out on European football next term. But their lofty ambitions in the market haven’t dwindled.

They’re ready to invest heavily this summer, with the former Inter star among several high-profile names on their list.
