Former Inter and Milan center-forward Mario Balotelli is desperate to return to Serie A after years of wandering in foreign lands. During his recent interview with DAZN, the ‘bad boy’ of Italian football revealed his ambition to play his trade in Calcio at the expense of another adventure outside his homeland.
“What I would like, definitely, is to return to Serie A, and that’s why I’m still at home because I’ve had enough offers from abroad, but I’ve slowed that down a bit because I still have hope,” Balotelli said, as reported by Calciomercato.
“Of course, if no Serie A offers arrive, I’ll make other choices.”
Balotelli last featured in Italy’s top flight in 2015/16. Liverpool loaned him back to Milan only a year after purchasing him for £16 million. His temporary return to San Siro didn’t go to plan, resulting in his switch to Nice in the summer of 2016.
The 34-year-old spent three years in France with Nice and Marseille before linking up with Serie B outfit Brescia in 2019. He then moved to Monza a year before the club would earn their maiden Serie A promotion. The career-long journeyman left Italy again in 2021.
Balotelli alternated between Adana Demirspor and Sion over the past three years. He’s been a free agent since his contract at the Turkish club expired at the end of the 2023/24 season. Perhaps it’s time for the opinion-splitting striker’s one last dance in Serie A.
It would be a fitting ending for one of the most promising careers that never came to be.
