Former Inter Playmaker Eriksen to Restart Career at Brentford

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen was handed his contract termination at Inter in mid-December, after it was announced that he would not be permitted to play in Serie A due to the presence of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) he had implanted due to a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s EURO 2020 opener against Finland on 12 June.

In a surprising turn of events, Premier League outfit Brentford FC have signed the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder on a short-term contract until the end of the 2021/22 season on transfer deadline day – according to an official statement by the Bees. He has been out of action for the past seven months.

The Dane was a free agent, taking advantage of which Brentford have stepped up to offer him a chance to resume his professional playing career. He will return to England after spending six and a half seasons with Tottenham, before which he played at Ajax.

Also, he has been deemed fit to restart playing after passing all the necessary medical and fitness tests. Brentford also have the option to extend his contract for a further year.

29-year-old Eriksen was part of Inter’s 2020/21 Scudetto winning season under Antonio Conte, having signed with the Nerazzurri in the 2020 January winter transfer window, with only six months left on his Spurs contract.

He made 60 appearances for Inter over the course of two seasons, scoring 8 goals in the process.

Eriksen will look to revive his career under Thomas Frank in West London, in a bid to make it back to the Denmark national team ahead of the World Cup at the end of this year. The playmaker will hope to get back into groove under Frank, having already played under him when he was Denmark’s U17 coach more than ten years ago.

He is currently training with Ajax’s youth players in Netherlands and is expected to make his second Premier League debut against English champions Manchester City on February 9.
