Once one of the brightest Colombian talents, former Inter midfielder Fredy Guarin has been going through a real-life drama these past few years. In an honest interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, the 37-year-old made a heartbreaking confession, admitting he’s having problems with alcoholism as a recovering drug addict.
“I’m a 100% alcoholic and I admit it. I am a recovering drug addict. I was an alcoholic for several years,” Guarin said. “When I left Millonarios (in 2021, ed.) I hit the lowest point because, in those years, my addiction became very serious.
“I was no longer working in training, I had lost my dignity, the trust of my loved ones, and the most important and precious thing I have, which is my three children. I lost a lot of things on a sentimental and love level.“
Guarin, who spent four years at Inter between 2012 and 2016, conceded his unhealthy lifestyle pushed his ‘fake friends’ away. However, several individuals, including Javier Zanetti, have remained by his side.
“I have lost many friends, but others have remained by my side. Now I know who my real friends are. The ones who want to see me feel good. Falcao, James Rodriguez, Juan Fernando Quintero, Ospina, Cuadrado, Zanetti, Cordoba, and others who were there in those dark moments by my side. They were willing to help me.
“Others left without saying a word. They weren’t friends.“
Guarin’s emotionally gripping testimony probably best explains Zanetti’s character. As the Argentine fights to keep hold of his position under new ownership, his unwavering determination and loyalty shine through, echoing his legendary commitment to the club through thick and thin.
