Lazio embarrassed themselves in the second semi-final of the 2023/24 Supercoppa Italiana, slumping to a disheartening 3-0 defeat to runaway Serie A leaders Inter on Friday. Former Biancocelesti ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic admitted the Rome outfit’s demolition ‘saddened’ him, insisting he misses his old club.
Milinkovic-Savic cut short his eight-year association with Lazio last summer to join Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Hilal in a blockbuster €40m deal. The 28-year-old midfielder penned a three-year contract in Riyadh but can’t stop thinking of his former employers.
“I was very saddened because I wanted to come on Monday to watch the final,” Milinkovic-Savic said, as quoted by Calciomercato. “Of course, I miss them. I was there for eight years. Yes, I saw some of my teammates.”
Inter put Lazio to the sword in Milinkovic-Savic’s city, denying the Serbia international a chance to cheer for Maurizio Sarri’s side in the title-defining fixture on Sunday.
Whether it’s a realistic prospect or wishful thinking, Lazio fans might have received a reason to hope their ex-talisman could return to the flock. Milinkovic-Savic was among the most prominent European stars to have departed the continent to embrace the riches of Saudi Arabia in the summer.
However, there are already troubles in paradise. Karim Benzema and Jordan Henderson have grown frustrated with their lives in the desert and are keen to return to Europe. Maybe Milinkovic-Savic could follow their example and pursue a Lazio comeback. At this point, it’s merely a theory.
