Former Marseille Talisman Reveals Failed Milan Negotiations in 2020/21

French winger Florian Thauvin has revealed the details behind his failed move to Milan from Marseille last campaign. The World Cup winner was agonizingly close to becoming a Rossoneri player in the summer of 2021, but instead chose to cross the Atlantic to join Mexican club Tigres.

In an exclusive interview with French TV outlet Canal+ (via SempreMilan.it), Thauvin disclosed the details of his negotiations with the seven-time European champions.

“My future was supposed to be at Milan, but they didn’t know the budget for next season, they didn’t know if they would be in the Champions League and they had important players to renew,” he said.

The players Thauvin is referring to are Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu, the two high-profile names who left for free at the end of last season. It was a situation that turned sour for the Rossoneri, a lose-lose situations of sorts.

He continued: That’s why they asked me for time. When I arrived in April, however, I didn’t want to wait any longer.”

The 29-year-old left-footer left Marseille after 8 seasons, wherein he racked up more than 200 appearances for the southern giants.
