Gasperini Looks Back at Failed Stint on Inter Bench

Gian Piero Gasperini had a cup of coffee at Inter after a few solid seasons at Genoa and years before taking over Atalanta. The gaffer lasted just four matches with the Nerazzurri, recording one draw and three losses. President Massimo Moratti didn’t like his tactical approach and hired Claudio Ranieri afterward.

The gaffer explained what happened in an interview with DAZN (via Sportitalia).

“I was truly hoping I would be able to restart the car. Sometimes it happens when you put a new battery in an old one. That didn’t occur, and I’m sorry for it. It was a very brief and unlucky stint, but not on a personal level. My goal was to get them back on track. However, almost none of those players did well afterwards. Some retired early, and others dealt with injuries. They completely rejected the three-man defence. That was their preclusion and the only reason for how things went down.”

On top of dishing on his Inter spell, Gasperini mused on the current state of Italian football.

“Its quality has surely decreased. We made the key error of not cultivating our product. There are very few Italian players. We have an enormous base of kids that play football, so I don’t understand why talents don’t emerge. We are surely the ones making mistakes, not them. The arrival of many mediocre foreigners lowered Serie A‘s level. We need to have the courage to say that. We failed to valorize our resources and must reintroduce our youngsters.”
