Gattuso Backs Napoli to Succeed in Serie A This Season

Gennaro Gattuso continues to support Napoli from afar despite a relatively messy divorce in the recent past. The gaffer picked his former team to take home the Scudetto in an interview with the TV show Le Iene (via Corriere dello Sport).

“I hope the Azzurri win the title after so many years, also for the way they are playing. They fully deserve it at this stage.”

The boss was quizzed about the differences between Serie A and La Liga.

“Not many. I think football is difficult in every country. I’m fine and having fun here.”

On top of dishing on Napoli, Gattuso weighed in on Italy not qualifying for the World Cup.

“We were unlucky considering that we missed two penalty kicks against Switzerland.”

Finally, the coach returned on an incident with goalie Giorgi Mamardshvili, whom he slapped after a blunder.

“Nothing serious happened. He made a mistake and caused a PK. He was desperate after the game, he apologized to me and I smacked him. It was a sign of affection, not a violent one.”

The former Partenopei and Milan coach took over Valencia in the summer following a sabbatical after a quick partying of the ways with Fiorentina in 2021. His side is currently ninth in the Spanish league, having collected 4 wins, 3 losses, and 4 defeats in the first 11 rounds. He managed Napoli for two seasons between 2019 and 2021, finishing 7th and then 5th.
