Genoa Close in On Loan Deal for Morten Thorsby

Genoa are inching closer to signing Union Berlin midfielder Morten Thorsby on a season-long loan as part of their aggressive recruitment campaign. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, talks between the parties have reached advanced stages.

The 27-year-old should join Genoa on a season-long loan with an option to buy. With Union Berlin poised to offload their underperforming star, Thorsby could soon touch down in Italy to complete his medicals. Having clocked up 17 caps for Norway, he should bring experience and stability to the Serie A newcomers.

Following a successful season-long spell in Serie A, Alberto Gilardino’s men return to Italy’s top flight to stay. They won’t take any chances following a dismal relegation in 2021/22. Quality signings are crucial for Genoa if they’re to secure survival in their comeback Serie A campaign.

Mario Retegui’s arrival from Argentina headlines an ever-growing list of new additions at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Aaron Martin and Nicola Leali are other decent-looking acquisitions, but that’s not enough. On the other hand, Thorsby could be a massive coup for Genoa.

Thorsby is familiar with the surroundings as he spent three years at Genoa’s bitter rivals Sampdoria between 2019 and 2022. He left Italy to join Union Berlin last summer, but the move hasn’t panned out well. After only making eight Bundesliga starts in 2022/23, he’s desperate to rekindle his career in Serie A.

While his move to Genoa will likely antagonize Sampdoria fans, Thorsby won’t be bothered as La Samp dropped to Serie B last term.
