Genoa Coach Gilardino Previews Tough Trip to Unbeaten Lecce

Only three teams have had the honors of going unbeaten so far after four games in Serie A, and Lecce are one of them. As the Salentini await to host Genoa in what is touted to be a high-tempo clash at the Stadio Comunale Via del Mare, visiting coach Alberto Gilardino feels his side has to proceed with caution.

Gilardino spoke to the microphones (via Tuttomercatoweb) from the Gianluca Signorini Sports Center in Pegli and gave his thoughts on the visit to the East Coast.

“It’s a team that started off strong. They are fourth in the standings. They have been constructed in the right way by Roberto D’Aversa, who’s a valuable coach, and sporting director Pantaleo Corvino, whom I know very well. They have given continuity to the team’s identity. They have stamina, strenght, and important individualities. We have prepared ourselves by keeping our self-esteem very high in recent days. We must bring to Lecce the good things we did against Napoli. Everything will depend on our usual principles and prerogative this season: attitude and performance.”

Genoa have had mixed results so far, although they have mustered important points against Lazio and Napoli.

“The perception is that after the victory against Lazio, the performance in Turin, and the draw with Napoli, the team is acquiring self-confidence and belief and more and more desire and hunger to stay in the match and fight.”

Lecce have had a dream start this season, going unbeaten with two victories and as many draws.

“They are in good shape physically and know how to play football. They ride on the wave of enthusiasm. I told the boys to be ready, to have the right mentality, and the right approach to the match.”

Genoa haven’t tasted defeat to Lecce in Serie A in over 30 years, a run of 12 unbeaten matches. However, Roberto D’Avera’s new-look Lecce seem like a different breed compared to the sides the Rossoblù have previously faced.
