Genoa Exec Explains Retegui Deal, Warns on Gudmundsson

Genoa are holding keys in this stretch of the window as their search for a suitable replacement is instrumental in the departure of Albert Gudmundsson toward Fiorentina and eventually Nico Gonzalez’s future. Atalanta and Juventus are on the Argentine’s trail.

Their CEO Andres Blazquez dished to Il Secolo XIX.

“We’ll remain competitive. We have never stopped investing and will continue to do so. The goal of our sales is to make the squad stronger. Mateo Retegui asked us to leave, and we were prepared for that. That’s why we spent €27M for Vitinha. Atalanta gave us what we demanded, and we struck a deal quickly. We’ll further add to our attack. The coach wants a forward who’s a better fit four our style. We had already gotten things started in January with the Portuguese and David Ankeye. Moreover, Caleb Ekuban has improved a lot compared to three years ago.”

The Genoa chief issued a warning about Gudmundsson.

“We greenlight the departures only if they help us and we already have a substitute in hand. We have rejected Fiorentina’s bids because we don’t have that, so we can’t part ways with him now. They offered to double his salary. We gave him a rise too, but he informed us that he’d like to go. However, we don’t want to and not for economic reasons but rather technical ones. He’s a key player for us. We’re reducing the payroll and recorded some ‘plusvalenze,’ which will allow us to spend.”
