Genoa In Talks With Household Goalkeeper to Replace Martinez

Shocking news came from England as The Athletic broke the story of David de Gea’s ongoing talks to join Genoa on Saturday night. The former Manchester United goalkeeper is ready to return to football after a year-long hiatus and could surprisingly touch down at the Luigi Ferraris.
Genoa have been in the market for a new shot-stopper since Josep Martinez joined Inter in early July. They seem to have found a solution in the most likeliest place. De Gea, a household name in world football, could team up with Alberto Gilardino’s team in one of the most astonishing summer deals.
The Spaniard’s switch to Genoa would borderline Raphael Varane’s move to Como. Both players carry notable reputations despite their recent struggles. De Gea broke every goalkeeping record during his 12-year stint at Old Trafford. He won five major titles with Man Utd, including the Premier League trophy in 2013.
During his time at United, De Gea became the club’s highest appearance maker for a goalkeeper, registering 545 matches for the Red Devils while shattering Peter Schmeichel’s record for clean sheets at the Theatre of Dreams. At 33, he’s in the autumn of his playing career but would still be a massive coup for Genoa.
Although De Gea has received lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and MLS, he’s open to joining Genoa for less money. He’d bring a wealth of experience to Gilardino’s squad and be a safe pair of gloves between the sticks as the Griffins bid to improve on last season’s 11th-place finish.
