Genoa Set to Sign Marseille Outcast Permanently

Genoa will, in all likelihood, purchase Olympique Marseille loanee Vitnha permanently in the coming weeks. According to Sky Sport Italia via Gianluca Di Marzio, Les Olympiens are ready to grant the Griffins a substantial discount to facilitate the 24-year-old’s departure.
While Genoa inserted a buyout clause in Vitinha’s loan agreement in January, it was impossible for the club from Marassi to fork out the agreed €25 million. Instead, they tried to drive the price down after showing great desire to keep hold of the versatile forward.
Negotiations with Marseille seem to have come to fruition as Genoa are now on the verge of snapping up the Portuguese for €15m. The French side’s kindness isn’t entirely altruistic. Despite their ambition to sever ties with Vitinha, they will retain a buyback option.
It’s no surprise Marseille are eager to offload the ex-Braga man. They paid the Portuguese outfit a staggering €32m to sign Vitinha in January 2023. However, he only netted six goals and chipped in with four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions during his one-year stay at the Stade Velodrome.
Vitinha’s form at Genoa in the second half of last season was far from impressive either. He bagged two goals in nine Serie A games for Alberto Gilardino’s team, largely thanks to his repeated fitness woes. But he’s still eager to prolong his career in Italy following a nightmarish spell in Ligue 1.
