Exit-bound Tigre center-forward Mateo Retegui is one step away from joining newly-promoted Serie A side Genoa. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Italians have defined the final details of the 24-year-old’s move to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Retegui will touch down in Italy on Monday to undergo his medical before putting pen to paper on a multi-year contract. If the routine checks go smoothly, the official announcement could arrive on Tuesday. Genoa are expected to fork out close to €15m to get the deal over the line.

Earlier in the summer, Inter seemed in pole position to sign the Italy international. However, the track went cold after the Nerazzurri switched their attention toward Marcus Thuram. With Inter backing off, Genoa have been left with a clear path.

Alberto Gilardino’s men have seized the opportunity. However, they had to survive some scary moments. Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a valid attempt to hijack Retegui’s move to Serie A. Luckily for Genoa, the Premier League side’s ongoing battle with FFP has rendered a deal impossible.

Retegui spent his entire playing career in Argentina. He learned his trade at both River Plate and Boca Juniors at the youth level before joining Tigre in 2022. His imminent transfer to Serie A is perhaps the only fitting way for the Argentina native to continue his career, given his Italian origins.

Genoa have already completed two summer signings ahead of their top-flight return. Nicola Leali and Aaron Martin have joined the team thus far.
