Hamsik Not Joining Calzona at Napoli for the Time Being

Marek Hamsik was tipped to come back to Napoli as part of new coach Francesco Calzona’s staff or in a different role, but he declined the proposal, as he explained to RTVS (via SOSFanta).

“Coaching Napoli is like a dream come true for him. The Federation handled the negotiation and had to greenlight the hiring. Everything was arranged to make all parties happy. I’ll be in town for the Barcelona game on Wednesday, but I had planned the trip a long time ago. After the draw, I decided not to miss out on a great clash. It wasn’t related to the gaffer.”

Hamsik motivated his choice.

“Calzona reached out to me when this opportunity arose and wanted me to join him. I’ll surely meet with Aurelio De Laurentiis in Naples. However, I’ve already explained to both that I feel that my place is in Slovakia and not there now. It’s an enticing offer, as it’s my second home, and I’d like to go back one day. But it’s not the right time for that to happen.”

Calzona spoke about Hamsik in his introductory presser.

“I strongly wanted him to come here. However, he’s running an important academy and couldn’t organize everything on short notice. Never say never, because I think he and Diego Armando Maradona are the most beloved Napoli players ever. He’s a great guy and collaborates with me on the national team. I’m happy for that; I gave him room, and he’s really good.”
