How Serie A Could Have a Sixth Champions League Team

Serie A has secured a fifth Champions League participant thanks to a top-two finish in the UEFA ranking season. However, there’s a chance it’ll get a sixth one. It would happen if Roma or Atalanta lifted the Europa League. Their triumph could benefit other teams too, though. An extra spot would be added if the winner finished in the top five, Corriere dello Sport relays (via Mediaset).

The clubs recently received an informal confirmation from UEFA. The international body could issue a statement in the coming weeks. In such a scenario, the Italian championship would send eight outfits to Europe.

The situation could get clearer after the semifinals already as Roma and Atalanta are on the opposite side of the bracket. They will face Bayer Leverkusen and Olympique Marseille respectively. La Dea is currently sixth and got closer to the Giallorossi in the last round; plus, it has a game in hand. Lazio aren’t far behind, while there’s some gap with Fiorentina and Napoli.

If the Viola took home the European Conference League and finished outside the top eight, Serie A would have nine teams in the continental competitions next season. Instead, if the Gigliati concluded the season exactly in eighth position and won the trophy, there’d be three Italian teams in the Europa League and none in the third-tier cup in 2024/2025. Atalanta and Fiorentina both have a game in hand due to the postponement of their head-to-head clash, which hasn’t been scheduled yet.
