Hummels Arrives in Italy to Complete His Roma Move

After a lull in the talks that led to some pessimism, Roma and Mats Hummels resumed negotiating and reached an agreement. The defender has landed in the Eternal City for the medicals and the signature. The announcement will come on Wednesday or Thursday.

According to Sky, the parties found a compromise on the contract and the wages. The player preferred just a one-year deal with no clauses or options. He’ll make €2M plus add-ons. He starred in 40 matches across all competitions last season, scoring 4 times. The veteran had two lengthy spells at Borussia Dortmund, from 2008 to 2016 and then from 2019 to 2024 after spending time at Bayern Munich. He contributed to winning two Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal, and two DFL Super Cups.

Hummels wasn’t the only experienced defender approached by Roma. They have been linked to Kostas Manolas, who’s searching for a team after his spell at Salernitana.

Even though there might have been a phone call between the parties, the Greek center-back posted on Instagram that there was no truth to the reports and he’s not coming back. He has made 206 appearances with them. After departing in 2019, he played for Napoli, Olympiacos, and Sharjah FC before heading back to Serie A.

Our Take on Roma and Hummels

One more center-back was a must, and, after their mishaps on deadline day, they signed the two best available options. A third signings would suggest that they are contemplating switching to a three-man defense regularly, which would be interesting but wouldn’t solve their tactical conundrum up front.
