Immobile Back on the Mend with Another Thigh Injury

Ciro Immobile has been diagnosed with a thigh strain following the Napoli clash, which puts him at risk of missing the Derby with Roma next week. The striker was expected to sit Tuesday’s Conference League clash with AZ Alkmaar due to soreness in the area and ankle pain. However, the tests revealed a more severe situation.

The team announced that the marksman sustained a grade-one biceps femoris lesion in the left thigh and that he would be monitored daily to determine the recovery time. Per Goal, he’ll skip Sunday’s match versus Bologna and the return leg against the Dutch team. He’ll be a late call for the crosstown encounter. His availability for the next Italy matches is also up in the air.

Maurizio Sarri weighed in on Immobile in the pre-game presser.

“He has never been in perfect shape since hurting his ankle last year. He took painkillers to play Friday. Such problem causes imbalance elsewhere, and he suffers from it after six or seven matches in a row.”

Lazio will go back to using Felipe Anderson as a false-nine, with Mattia Zaccagni and Pedro on the flanks. Youngsters Matteo Cancellieri and Luka Romero will get more opportunities in the upcoming tilts.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Immobile is paying the price for his heavy workload. It’s his fourth muscular injury in less than a year. He has averaged 50/60 matches in the past 7 seasons, and that’s taking its toll since he’s 33. He might have to pick his spots in the future.
