Insigne Discusses Bond with Napoli, Exit and Di Lorenzo

Despite the move to Toronto FC, Lorenzo Insigne remains very attached to Napoli. The attacker spoke about his tie to the city in an interview with DAZN (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“I miss playing with the Azzurri, but I have made my choice and I don’t regret it. I’m their first fan, and that’s my home. If I ever left Canada, it’ll be to go back. But I’m here now and I’m focusing on being fit. It’s hurtful to watch games from the stands, but it is what it is.”

The forward looked back at some missed opportunities.

“It was a shame that we didn’t manage to win the Scudetto. We had our chances both with Maurizio Sarri and Luciano Spalletti, but we didn’t pull it off. We were particularly close with the former. I hope the Partenopei will be able to reach this goal one day. Their fans truly deserve it because they give a lot to the squad. I wish they will always be proud of me. Their affection was palpable in my last game against Genoa. The decision not to extend the contract wasn’t exclusively up to me.”

Insigne dished on new Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

“It’s not an easy job, but he has everything to do it. I’m available to advise him at any moment. I know what it means to wear that armband. He has the right character for it, and I knew he was next in line if Kalidou Koulibaly left as well. He’s a hard worker and always helps the coach and his teammates. He’s experienced and contributed to winning Euro 2020. I’m happy he’s my heir.”
