German legend Lothar Matthaus has recalled his four-year stint at Inter Milan with great passion. Matthaus proved to be a force to be reckoned with during his Serie A stay, and It was during his time at the Nerazzurri that he led Germany to their 1990 World Cup win.
Speaking to FourFourTwo (via FCInterNews), the iconic midfielder commented on the quality of the Italian top-flight during those days.
“It was a fantastic period, Italian football was probably at its peak, with some magnificent players like Diego Maradona, Ruud Gullit, Roberto Baggio, Marco van Basten. And those were just our rivals. Every weekend was a battle, and at Inter we were willing to die for each other on the pitch.”
Matthaus was one of the three eligible non-Italian players signed by Inter, with the other two also being German icons – Jurgen Klinsmann and Andreas Brehme.
“Sharing that experience with them, two excellent players with a huge mentality, was a privilege. Off the field, our teammates adopted us as if we were their own: Italians who happened to come from another country. We all spent a lot of time together, in restaurants and at each other’s homes. Thanks to that union we had success on the pitch. I really appreciate my medals won in Serie A and in the UEFA Cup.”
The former Germany midfielder scored 53 goals in 153 appearances for Inter between 1988 and 1992
