Inter and Milan have been working together to build a new stadium in the San Siro area. However, the process has been lengthy and arduous. The finish line isn’t in sight yet. The clubs are still considering different zones where it could be easier to get it done.
According to Corriere della Sera, the two sides will ultimately play in two different arenas, with the Nerazzurri possibly staying put for a few reasons. First of all, their ownership situation is cloudy since the Zhang family has stopped funneling money. They must settle or renegotiate a €275M loan from Oaktree in 2024. They have tasked Raine Group and Goldman Sachs with finding a partner or possibly a buyer.
Instead, new Milan governor Gerry Cardinale is very determined. They are seriously mulling other options, such as San Giovanni, San Donato, Rozzano, and former racecourse La Maura near the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, to expedite the project. It would be a more expensive choice, but demolishing the current one costs €150M.
If Milan proceeded on their own, Inter could stay in San Siro, contribute to the renovations, and rediscuss the terms with the city council. Major Giuseppe Sala weighed in on the matter (via Calcio e Finanza).
“I’m fine with everything, as long as they stay here. I told the clubs that constructing it isn’t the only issue. Its management is problematic too. We have to use 60/70 traffice cops in each game. It’d be challenging for smaller towns to take on such burden. I’m biased but I reiterate that they’ll have troubles if they go elsewhere. I’m open to listening if they want to formally discuss other areas.”
