Inter and Milan Reconsider New Stadium in San Siro Area

Inter and Milan have reignited a project to build a new stadium in the same zone as the current one, San Siro, which was first ideated six years ago but then discarded due to some difficulties. Representatives of both teams had a meeting with Mayor Giuseppe Sala, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, and the Superintendence of the Fine Arts, which plays a role in the future of the Giuseppe Meazza, on Tuesday, Corriere della Sera reports.

The two sides took a clear step forward. They’d buy the entire site, and the price, which will be set by the income revenue authority, will be pivotal in determining whether the idea is viable. The present stadium would be torn down for the most part. The rest would be used for concerts and other events.

All parties were in agreement during the summit, but it remains to be seen whether the idea will resist the local opposition. Sala stated that the outfits would soon proceed with the formalities to carry it on. The green light could come next spring, and, after that, it’d take four or five years to complete the construction.

Milan president Paolo Scaroni dished to Sky Sport (via Calciomercato).

“The meeting went very well. We overcame the obstacle of having to maintain part of San Siro. We can build a new arena next to it, and keep that section. It’s an option we can consider more seriously now. There are some ways to go, including the valuation of the area. It’s still up in the air, so we continue to work on our fallback in San Donato, on which we have spent €40M already.”
