Inter Boss Desperate to Tie Star Defender to New Deal

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi is reportedly desperate to tie star wingback Denzel Dumfries down to a new long-term contract. According to Sky Sport Italia via TMW, the Scudetto-winning coach has instructed the Nerazzurri management to accelerate renewal talks with the Netherlands international.

Dumfries signed a four-year deal when he joined Inter from PSV Eindhoven in 2021. Therefore, he’ll become a free agent next summer unless he agrees to extend his contract at Giuseppe Meazza. Inzaghi seems hellbent on preventing that from happening.

Inter and Dumfries initiated extension talks in the summer. However, EURO 2024 and rumored interest from Manchester United had indefinitely postponed further negotiations. Erik ten Hag’s bid to lure his countryman to Old Trafford in August left the 28-year-old caught in two minds.

Dumfries starred for Inter in their title-winning campaign last term despite often trading places with Matteo Darmian on the right flank. Nothing has changed this season, with Inzaghi handing the Dutch stalwart only one start in Serie A.

While that could suggest a lack of trust, Inzaghi wants Dumfries to commit his long-term future to Inter. Meanwhile, the club would reportedly offer their offensive-minded defender an improved contract to convince him to put pen to paper.

That new deal would exclude a release clause, as Inter have no intention of selling Dumfries despite his relatively sparse playing time at the beginning of the new season. Now, it’s up to the player to decide. Let’s see if Inzaghi would start him against Udinese on Saturday.
