Inter superstar Lutaro Martinez reached an unprecedented feat in Serie A history with an out-of-this-world performance against Salernitana on Saturday. The 26-year-old came off the bench in the 55th minute to score four and tear Paulo Sousa’s in-trouble side single-handedly at Stadio Arechi.
Despite an overwhelming 4-0 scoreline, Inter didn’t shine in Salerno. They suffered a lot against Salernitana’s stubborn backline, especially in the opening hour of play. Simone Inzaghi made a strange choice, leaving Martinez on the bench for the first time this season.
However, after Alexis Sanchez did next to nothing across 55 minutes, the Argentine forward had to come on as Inter couldn’t find a way to beat Guillermo Ochoa. Martinez needed less than ten minutes on the pitch to provide a breakthrough.
What the ex-Racing Club man did for the rest of the night was pure magic. As revealed by Gianluca Di Marzio, the Inter skipper became the first player in Serie A history to score four times off the bench in a single game. But it’s not the end of it.
Martinez achieved another feat unheard of beforehand, tallying four goals in only 27 minutes of play. He almost doubled his seasonal tally in less than one half of football. The Inter talisman headed into Saturday’s game with five Serie A goals under his belt in 2023/24. He had four yesterday!
Despite delivering an insane performance, Martinez chose to stay humble in the aftermath. He reiterated his desire to help Inter, insisting his personal numbers are irrelevant compared to the club’s gains.
