Inter Captain Relieved After Ending Scoring Drought: “It Was Important to Start Scoring Again”

Inter star Lautaro Martinez opened his Serie A account for the 2024/25 season with a match-winning brace against Udinese on Saturday. The Argentine forward netted on either side of halftime to inspire Simone Inzaghi’s side to an all-important 3-2 victory at the Bluenergy Stadium.

Martinez headed into proceedings seeking his first league goal this season after winning the Capocannoniere award last term. Despite missing a glorious chance in the opening ten minutes, the 27-year-old finally ended his scoring duck on the stroke of halftime.

Federico Dimarco set the Inter captain up perfectly for the goal, and Martinez couldn’t miss from barely a yard out. While Martinez didn’t have much to do for the first, he had to demonstrate his class to put daylight between the sides at the start of the second half.

Marcus Thuram played him through with a simple pass. After picking up the ball on the edge of the box, the 2024 Copa America winner slammed the ball into the bottom corner with a clinical finish. Inter fans must be thrilled to see their talisman back on the scoresheet.

For me, it was important to start scoring again because an attacker always seeks to score goals, but first and foremost, I try to work for the team,” the Inter skipper told the club’s website after the game. “The goal comes afterward, even though it makes me happier. I needed to continue working to elevate Inter even higher.

The important thing is that the team wins. The right attitude, working even harder, and humility are the keywords we repeated to ourselves and that we needed to demonstrate every day.

Inspired by Martinez’s stunning performance, Inter returned to winning ways after last weekend’s loss to Milan.
