Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has responded to Romelu Lukaku’s assertions regarding the summer breakdown in the relationship between the parties. In one of his recent interviews, the former Juventus chief executive identified the new Roma striker as a ‘gold digger,’ albeit in a nicely wrapped-up package.
“In football, the God of money reigns supreme,” the Inter sporting director said, as quoted by FCInterNews. “When you have a relationship based on trust, it can turn into mistrust. But also disappointment as well.
“It’s part of sport, a rich sport where money is king,” Marotta continued. “Lukaku is part of our recent past. I look to the future, which is the most important thing.”
While the reason behind Lukaku’s strained relationship with Inter remains hidden from public eyes, the Chelsea loanee seems unwilling to drop this matter. He recently admitted the fans would be ‘shocked’ if they were to learn the whole truth behind his fallout with Nerazzurri.
Quizzed about the marksman’s controversial statement, the Inter CEO replied: “He’s free to say what he wants. But I don’t understand why Lukaku says things like that. I don’t see why he should create controversy,” he added.
Inter and Lukaku were locked in talks over the Belgian’s return to Giuseppe Meazza for most of the summer. However, the 30-year-old’s secret meetings with Juventus during ongoing negotiations with Nerazzurri had forced Simone Inzaghi’s side to pull the plug on a deal.
With his options running thin toward the end of the transfer window, he joined Roma on loan.
