Inter Change Plan of Attack to Sign Lukaku from Chelsea

Chelsea don’t want to send Romelu Lukaku back to Inter on loan, as they prefer a permanent sale. The Nerazzurri could come close to such formula thanks to a domino involving André Onana and Marcelo Brozovic.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Serie A side expects Manchester United to formally offer around €50M for the goalkeeper this week and is ready to take it. All parties are working toward such an outcome. His agent is spending time in England to arrange the deal.

If the Onana sale went through in a hurry, Inter would reroute part of the money to acquire Lukaku. However, they are unlikely to give Chelsea as much as they’d like, €40M on the nail. They will propose a temporary spell with a €30M obligation to buy. The relationship between the two sides has soured a little because the Nerazzurri shut the door for Nicolò Barella, whom the Blues covet.

The Belgian striker is eager to return, but he’d have to decrease his salary to make it happen. He has rejected offers from Saudi Arabia for now, and he doesn’t want to join Milan. But he won’t wait forever, while the Serie A’s club strategy takes time.

Having missed out on Guglielmo Vicario, Inter would invest a portion of the Onana fee on Lukaku rather than a young goalkeeper. They’d fill their hole between the sticks with a relatively cheap and reliable veteran. Yann Sommer could leave Bayern Munich on loan. Hugo Lloris is likely to depart Tottenham after the acquisition of the Empoli shot-stopper. PSG’s Keylor Navas is also available after spending the previous season at Nottingham Forest. The contracts of the last two are up in 2024.
