Inter Concerned with Defender Injury Ahead of Liverpool Game

Alessandro Bastoni left Tuesday’s Coppa Italia win over Roma in the first half due to an ankle injury. The medical staff had to carry the defender off the pitch as he could not put weight on his leg.

Bastoni has been suspended for the next two Serie A matches for insulting one of the officials after the Derby. He is also at risk for February 16th’s game versus Liverpool now. He will undergo some tests to assess the extent of the problem soon.

Coach Simone Inzaghi weighed in after the match: “The only negative aspect about tonight was his injury. We hope it is nothing significant and that we will not lose him for too much time. He is too important to us. He fell awkwardly on a tackle.”

CEO Giuseppe Marotta told SportMediaset that they were considering appealing the sanctions against Bastoni and Inzaghi: “We will analyze the paperwork and evaluate. I can not go into details, but we will see what we can do alongside our lawyer. These evaluations are entirely up to the sports judge, but we could question whether they are congruous.”

Between the two issues, Bastoni will most likely sit out Saturday’s key clash against Napoli. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inzaghi has three options to replace him. The most likely one is Danilo D’Ambrosio, moving Milan Skriniar to the left-hand side of the defense, as it happened Tuesday. Federico Dimarco and Matteo Darmian are candidates to fill in as well.
