Inter Currently Leading Race for New Azzurri Weapon

After earning the call-up by Italy, Mateo Retegui might get the chance to transfer to Serie A next summer, as a few striker-seeking sides are hot on his trail, with Inter reportedly ahead of the competition. The striker will debut either against England or Malta.

Per La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri have been tracking him for a year. They have gotten in touch with his entourage to gain the inside track and convince him of the validity of the technical project they concocted for him.

The entire Inter brass is in agreement about Retegui and his potential. Deputy director Dario Baccin spoke with his father during a recent trip to South America. They suggested a trajectory similar to Lautaro Martinez’s one when he joined. He wasn’t a full-time starter at first, as they eased him into a squad. He eventually became a cornerstone thanks to his performances.

The youngster is on a year-long loan from Boca Juniors to Tigre. He’s under contract with the former until 2024. El Matador will acquire half of his rights for €2.1M. Both Argentinian teams are keen La Beneamata-owned youngster Facundo Colidio, who’s currently a teammate of the new Azzurri striker.

Our Take on Retegui and Inter

The Nerazzurri will most likely lose either Edin Dzeko or Romelu Lukaku in the summer, or perhaps both. It’s not entirely up to them, but they should pick one of the two veterans and sign wo young guns to overhaul their attack. They figure to be the likeliest Italian landing spot given their Argentinian connection and already existent ties with the two teams involved in the deal, but they’ll have to be quick.
