A mouth-watering Serie A clash between top-four hopefuls Bologna and runaway leaders Inter is underway, but there’s a lot happening behind the scenes. Rossoblu manager Thiago Motta left the highly-rated teenager Giovanni Fabbian on the bench.
However, Yann Bisseck’s first-half header gave Inter a slender halftime lead, meaning the Bologna boss must make changes in the second half to overturn the deficit. The 21-year-old midfielder is among the likeliest candidates to come from the bench as his side bids to pull off another comeback after beating Atalanta 2-1 last weekend.
Fabbian swapped Inter for Bologna ahead of the 2023/24 season, carrying a reputation as one of Italy’s brightest prospects. And he was the subject of Beppe Marotta’s pre-game interview, with the veteran CEO revealing the club’s ambition to trigger a buyback clause in the youngster’s deal.
“He is an Inter player because we have a buyback on him, and we are proud that he went to cut his teeth in the province,” Marotta said, as quoted by Gazzetta dello Sport. “He needs to prove his worth to return to Inter, but there are all the conditions for that to happen.“
But Fabbian will not return to Inter at the end of the season. Marotta confirmed the clause will only become valid after the 2024/25 campaign.
“Not at the end of this season because the buyback is at the end of the 2024-25 season. We’ll see what the best solution will be for us and for him,” the Inter chief finished.
