Inter Doctor Comments on Widespread Injury Emergency

Several teams have already been plagued by injuries this season, and much of the blame has been put on the busy schedule. Inter doctor Piero Volpi took stock to Radio Rai (via Calciomercato).

“The situation is getting increasingly worse. We have trouble containing both long-term and minor physical problems. Football is suffering from two things that are hardly compatible: the density of games, as many teams play twice a year for the entire season, and the lack of practice time. The issue lies mostly with that. You have just two trainings between matches: one to recuperate and the other to prepare for the next opponent. There’s no room to work on necessary qualities like strength, speed, and stamina. In 240/250 sessions per year, only a quarter of them are truly useful in that sense.”

Volpi proposed a couple of solutions.

“Those who don’t feature consistently are getting hurt too. The playing time must be balanced. We’ve shared this with coah Simone Inzaghi, who’s very intelligent and responsible. You have to safeguard who log 4500 minutes and the fringe contributors who record just 1000.”

The Inter doctor also addressed the schedule.

“The pause between the end of the Euro and the start of the new season was very short. There was no time for a mental break. The international windows are an issue, because 12/15 days away from the team completely change the routine. Players tend to get injured in different environments. Another possible proposal is to reduce the leagues from 20 to 18 teams. It would free up a month to practice and for the national teams.”
