Inter Exec Makes His Pick Between Thuram and Lukaku

Inter director Piero Ausilio has a clear preference between Marcus Thuram and Romelu Lukaku and disclosed they had to beat a few teams to sign the former. He spoke to the press after receiving the ‘Spiga d’Oro’ (via Calciomercato).

“My answer is simpler compared to Giuseppe Marotta’s one. Thuram wanted Inter with the same strenght we chose him. We had sealed the deal to sign him two years ago already, then he got hurt. We never forgot about him, and he didn’t either, evidently. Other teams deny chasing after him now, but they were in the race. He made the call to join us.”

Inter reportedly surpassed Milan at the last corner to snap up the former Borussia Moenchengladbach star on a free move last summer. Their CEO instead had picked Mauro Icardi over Lukaku after the recent allusions by the Roma striker.

Ausilio went on to comment on the start of the season.

“It’s positive, and it wasn’t easy. There are some difficulties in any campaign at first. They derive from changing 12 players, which is risky. We lost footballers of the caliber of Samir Handanovic and Danilo D’Ambrosio. The newcomers fit right in, despite some slip-ups, which are natural.”

Inter sit in second place after eight matchdays, two points behind Milan. They’ll face Torino at home when Serie A resumes on Saturday.
