Inter Getting Tired with Dumfries Hesitating on New Deal

There’s optimism about Denzel Dumfries renewing his contract with Inter, but the signature doesn’t appear imminent yet. Their brass is starting to get frustrated with the delays. They are ready to issue an ultimatum in the short term, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

Giuseppe Marotta and co. would like an answer within a week when the Dutchman will report back from international duties. He has signaled he’ll take their proposal, which hasn’t changed since the negotiation started a year ago but hasn’t formally relayed it yet.

Inter offered Dumfries to nearly double his wages, from €2.5M to €4M annually. He’d earn as much as Federico Dimarco, who’s the unquestioned starter on the left wing, while he has to duel with Matteo Darmian and begins on the bench more often than not.

Despite what recent reports may indicate, the Nerazzurri have never intended to insert a release clause in his contract, especially a relatively low one. They are also unlikely to improve their bid. They didn’t in the talks with Nicolò Barella, Lautaro Martinez, and Simone Inzaghi, who all eventually accepted their terms.

Our Take on Inter and Dumfries

A deadline should have come during the summer when they could have sold him for a profit. They could still do that in January, but his valuation would plummet without a renewal as his suitors could simply wait it out. The Nerazzurri struck a late agreement with Marcelo Brozovic in the past, while they failed to do so with Milan Skriniar, losing him for free. He’s a nice weapon but not a full-time contributor nor irreplicable, so they should have long nipped the matter in the bud. A release clause would be uncharacteristic.
